Moving house can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be with Happymoves! With a little planning and preparation, we can help you make the process much easier and less stressful. Here is a comprehensive moving house checklist to help you get started:
2-3 months before moving day:
- Book a moving company. If you’re hiring a moving company, it’s important to book them early, especially if you’re moving during peak season. Get quotes from multiple companies and compare their prices and services before making a decision. Of course, we suggest giving us a call at Happymoves to get things started or using our online quote builder.
- Declutter and get rid of unwanted items. This is a great opportunity to get rid of things you don’t use or need anymore. You can sell, donate, or recycle unwanted items.
- Start packing. Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing. Start with items that you don’t use very often, such as seasonal decorations or belongings from spare rooms. At Happymoves, we offer a full packing service to save you time.
- Label all boxes. Clearly label each box with the room it needs to go in and the contents of the box. This will make unpacking much easier.
- Change your address. Let your bank, credit card companies, insurance providers, and other important contacts know your new address. You can also submit a change of address form with the post office.
- Arrange for utilities to be connected at your new home. Contact your utility providers to schedule a start date for service at your new home.
- Hire a house cleaner. If you’re selling your home, you may want to hire a professional house cleaner to clean it before you move out. If you’re renting, you may be required to clean the property before you leave.
1-2 months before moving day:
- Pack your essentials box. This box should contain everything you need for the first few days in your new home, such as toiletries, clothes, medications, and important documents.
- Pack your valuables. Keep valuables such as jewelry, electronics, and important documents with you or in a safe place.
- Disassemble furniture. Disassemble large furniture items, such as beds and sofas, to make them easier to move. We can help with this too, just ask us for a quote.
- Confirm your moving arrangements. Confirm your moving date and time with your moving company. Also, confirm your start dates for utilities and other services at your new home.
1 week before moving day:
- Finish packing. Make sure all of your belongings are packed and ready to be moved.
- Load the moving truck. If you’re moving yourself, start loading the moving truck the day before moving day. Be sure to pack heavy items first and light items last. Of course, if you choose to move with us, this will all be done for you!
- Defrost your refrigerator and freezer. Defrost your refrigerator and freezer the day before moving day. This will give them time to dry out and prevent mold from growing.
Moving day:

- Lock up your old home and hand over the keys to your new owner or landlord.

- Pack a moving day survival kit. This kit should contain everything you need for the day of the move, such as snacks, drinks, a change of clothes, and toiletries.
- Label all boxes with a color-coding system. This will make it easy to find the boxes you need when you’re unpacking.
- Hire a babysitter or pet sitter for moving day. This will free you up to focus on moving your belongings.
